Takaro School Lighting Upgrade

Takaro school was in desperate need of a lighting upgrade.  There were multiple fittings that had very low light levels, only one tube working in a twin tube fitting, ballasts that were reaching the end of their life etc.  All in all this heavily contributed to inconsistent and poor light levels in many of the classrooms.  All of the fittings assessed consumed more electricity than their LED counterparts, a 64% reduction in electricity consumption could be achieved across the board.

We conducted the assessment with the caretaker, Dave.  This entailed checking every light fitting in the school and recording the fitting type, wattage, quantity, and room names/numbers. This information was then entered into our assessment software, along with the data from the school's energy bills and the average running hours, which enabled us to calculate both the current and projected energy and maintenance costs — before and after a potential LED upgrade. We were then able to formulate a proposal for the school which demonstrated that they should be able to meet a 5 year pay back period.

We returned during the school holidays and carried out the project within a 4 day period. The school is very pleased with the end result as this has allowed for vastly improved lighting levels in classrooms, removed the need for maintenance expense and hassle, lowered the electricity bills substantially and allowed the school to have a more positive impact on the environment.

Wilford School Lighting Upgrade

Wilford School was also in clear need of a comprehensive lighting upgrade. A number of existing fittings were underperforming, with aged fluorescent tubes, failing ballasts, and inconsistent light output across multiple classrooms. This resulted in uneven and inadequate lighting levels, creating an environment that was less than ideal for both students and staff. Our assessment found that all existing fittings were significantly less efficient than modern LED alternatives.

We carried out the assessment at Wilford School alongside the caretaker, ensuring every light fitting across the site was thoroughly checked. This involved identifying each fitting type, recording wattage, quantities, and noting the specific classroom or area locations. All collected data was then entered into our assessment software, along with information from the school’s energy bills and estimated average operating hours. This allowed us to accurately calculate the current energy usage and maintenance costs, and compare them against the projected costs following a full LED upgrade.

We returned to Wilford School during the school holidays and successfully completed the upgrade within a four-day period, ensuring there was no disruption to staff or students. The school has been extremely pleased with the outcome. The new LED lighting has delivered significantly improved and more consistent light levels across classrooms and shared spaces. In addition to enhancing the learning environment, the upgrade has eliminated the ongoing maintenance costs and inconvenience associated with failing fluorescent fittings. The project has also resulted in a substantial reduction in electricity consumption, lowering the school’s power bills and contributing to a more environmentally responsible operation overall.
